Drug Treatment in Idaho
By Lauri Starr-Jones
Idaho provides many types of treatments and facilities for drugs addicts. The goal of these treatment programs in Idaho is to help the addicts get rid of the habit. Some of the drug treatments that are run in Idaho are inpatient programs, outpatient programs, relapse prevention, the 12 step method, one on one counseling, Narconon, cognitive method, behavioral modification, drug rehabilitation, AA, support groups, NA, sober living and therapeutic communities.
It is important to attend the correct type of treatment program, which is better if tailor-made, for addicts. Such a program helps an individual to retrace his normal life. The programs provide the patients with tools that help in dealing with the day-to-day problems that occur and are related to addiction. These programs also help individuals to deal with the implications of drug addiction, to change the current lifestyle, to develop skills related to drug refusal and to identify signs of relapse.
The residential communities have been working in Idaho for the past 40 years. They are set up as residential areas, where the individuals get a chance to live in drug free areas. People living in such communities are provided with round the clock care and treatment that continues through out the year. The long-term treatment programs are for those who realize that they are amidst a serious problem due to drug addiction and want to get rid of it. In this type of program, treatment is provided 24x7, which may vary from 3 to 12 months.
Drug counseling is also provided in Idaho. The focus of this type of treatment is the recognition of the symptoms of addiction. Coping strategies are provided to addicts under this treatment. Outpatient treatments are often more economical than other types of treatments like inpatient or residential treatments. These are especially good for those who are employed or have a strong social support system. The Matrix model drug treatment that is provided in Idaho aims provides help to the heavy drug users, to stay engaged in other activities and help them to abstain from drugs. Individuals undergoing treatment are educated regarding the drug addiction and relapse. They also receive support and direction from a trained therapist, familiarize themselves with programs of self-help and undergo urine tests from time to time for drug use. These programs also provide information to and educate the family members of the drug abusers.
Another type of treatment that is based on counseling is motivational enhancement therapy. Bringing about a change in behavior solves the problems that are related to an individual's drug addiction. This helps the abusers to overcome their ambivalence regarding drugs and subsequently stop their drug abuse. This therapy brings a rapid mental change in the individual who then wants to get rid of his addiction. A battery session is followed by 2-4 sessions with the therapist, under this form of treatment.
All the different types of drug treatment programs that are provided in Idaho are focused towards freeing an individual from the addiction and helping them regain their normal social life. When these programs are measured, they show that they have brought about a change in the society by reducing criminal activities induced by drug addiction, better functioning within the family, improved medical conditions and higher rate of employment. The effectiveness of a particular type of treatment however, depends upon the extent of addiction, an individual's personal effort, appropriateness of the treatment and services.
