Drug Addiction Treatment - An Overview
By Rick Strong

Research suggests that there are 5 untreated people to every treated person when it comes to drug addiction treatment. If you are one among those who are addicted and do not know where to look for help - worry not. Read on to know the basics of drug treatment and its various approaches.

Drug addiction is a dangerous but curable disease. It is symbolized by an obsessive craving for drug and the lack of it causes adverse effects to the state of the addict, both mentally and physically. Drug addiction causes adverse effects to the health of the addict and an addict should ideally seek professional drug treatment to cure him of his addiction.

The ultimate goal of drug treatment is to be able to help an addict recover and lead a drug free life happily. When you are looking for a drug treatment program you should keep the following basics in mind always. One single treatment will not help all individuals. Each individual has to have a drug treatment that is tailor made for his needs. Another thing to keep in mind is that treatment should always be readily available and nearby so that the addict can get help whenever he needs immediately. An effective drug treatment should not only provide medical assistance but should also have therapy and counseling to help an addict cope with the changes that need to take place so that he can live a drug free life happily.

Drug addiction is almost always related to some sort of mental disorder. They might have some deep rooted insecurity or other such related problems that lead them to drug addiction. The drug treatment should also provide therapy to deal with these problems and help the addict move on in life. Another important point that one needs to remember is that drug treatment need not be voluntary to be effective. However, one should make sure that the drug treatment center carefully monitors drug use during treatment.

Detox, Rehab, Continued Care: The Three-Step Rehabilitation Process

Detox is the first stage where the patient is treated for all the ill effects of withdrawal. Once he is physically healthy the rehab stage begins where he undergoes therapy and counseling to help him deal with de-addiction. Continued Care comes in the form of group therapy and counseling sessions like Narcotics Anonymous which help recovering addicts on their road to recovery.

Drug treatment centers needs to be carefully selected so that the treatment is effective and the addict is completely cured.

Rick Strong is a recovering addict who has started a Self Help Foundation for those addicts who want to be cured. He owns and operates Rehab Online where you'll find loads of information about drug rehab and the various treatments available.
